2011 saw several changes in the recommended Immunization Schedule. This is the schedule we expect to be using in the future followed by brief explanations and links to external websites for further information.

  • Hepatitis B vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Pentacel - a combination vaccine that includes DTaP, HiB & IPV [qv]
  • DTaP - Diphtheria Tetanus and Pertussis vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • HiB - Haemophilus Influenzae Type b vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • IPV - Inert Polio vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Rotavirus – a common cause of severe vomiting and diarrhea. The new vaccine is for babies under 32 weeks of age only. [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Prevnar - Pneumococcal Conjugate vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Varivax - Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine - a booster dose is now being recommended. Older patients who received only one chickenpox vaccine dose can get a booster at their next visit. [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Hepatitis A vaccine - for a viral liver disease. This is an old vaccine with a new recommendation to become a routine immunization, two shots given 6 months apart during the second year. Catch up immunization is available for older patients. [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • MMR - Measles Mumps and Rubella vaccine. [CDC] [CHoP]
  • Menactra (Meningococcal) vaccine [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Adacel (Tdap - Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis) – replaces the old 12 year tetanus booster and contains a booster dose against whooping cough, a disease which has been increasing again. Parents of newborns can also consider getting this if their tetanus booster is due, to help protect their baby. [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Gardasil/HPV – a very exciting new vaccine against the virus known to cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts. It can be given to girls and boys between 9 and 26 years. [Merck info sheet] [CDC]  [CHoP]
  • Influenza vaccine (inactivated) – shots are now recommended for all children over 6 months of age. Flumist - the nasal spray vaccine (live, atenuated virus) is available for older patients. [CDC]  [CHoP] [CDC-Flumist]
